How to Store Rubber Sheet Rolls to Extend Service Life

Rubber sheet rolls feature a definite shelf life. Improper storage commonly leads to hardening, adhesion, discoloration and deformation, which severely undermine the physical performance and shorten the service life of rubber products. Based on our engineer’s advice, this guide shares practical storage rules for industrial rubber sheet rolls for global importers, distributors and end users.

1. Temperature & Humidity Control

Store rubber sheet rolls in a cool and dry environment with a constant temperature of 10–25°C. Extreme high temperature, direct sunlight and freezing environments are strictly prohibited.

The optimal relative humidity for storage ranges from 40%–70%. Excessively high humidity will cause mildew growth on the rubber surface, while overly dry ambient air will accelerate rubber aging and performance degradation.

Keep all rubber rolls far away from heat sources such as boilers and heaters. Long-term ultraviolet radiation will destroy the internal molecular structure of rubber, resulting in premature aging.

2. Stacking & Placement Standards

Vertical storage is the optimal solution for rubber sheet rolls. If horizontal stacking is unavoidable, strictly control the stacking layers. Heavy compression from overstacking will crush the inner paper core and cause permanent deformation of the rubber sheet surface.

It is recommended to place rubber rolls on standard pallets to isolate them from concrete floors, effectively preventing moisture absorption and damp damage from the ground.

Never place heavy goods or equipment on the top of rubber sheet rolls to avoid extrusion deformation.

3. Isolation from Harmful Substances

Rubber materials are chemically sensitive to various hazardous substances. All rubber rolls must be stored separately from oil, grease, organic solvents, acids, alkalis, ozone, as well as copper and manganese metals.

These harmful substances will trigger chemical reactions with rubber, accelerating aging, surface cracking and volume swelling, and completely damaging the practical performance of rubber sheets.

4. Ventilation & Packaging Protection

Maintain continuous and smooth ventilation in the warehouse storage area to avoid stagnant humid air.

Retain the original factory packaging film for all unused rubber sheet rolls. Do not remove the protective package until the products are ready for processing and use. Avoid long-term exposure to ambient air immediately after unpacking, so as to prevent oxidation and dust contamination.

5. Scientific Inventory Rotation

Adhere strictly to the First In, First Out (FIFO) inventory management principle. Mark the clear production date on each pallet of rubber rolls. Prioritize the use of early-production batches to avoid performance deterioration caused by excessive long-term storage.

6. Targeted Storage Tips for Different Rubber Types

  • NR / SBR Rubber Sheets: Weak resistance to oil corrosion and UV radiation. Sun exposure must be completely avoided during storage.

  • EPDM Rubber Sheets: Possess excellent weather resistance compared with ordinary rubber materials, but long-term direct sunlight storage is still not allowed.

  • Silicone Rubber Sheets: Insensitive to conventional temperature changes, but prolonged exposure to ozone and high-temperature environments will gradually reduce rubber elasticity and softness.
