Can Hammer cow mat Be Installed Over Uneven Compacted Gravel?
Many dairy farmers prefer gravel floors in barns for good drainage. It is common to wonder whether our hammer cow mat can be installed directly on uneven compacted gravel.
A small amount of gentle unevenness is acceptable for hammer cow mat. Its thick rubber structure and hammer textured surface can tolerate minor bumps of compacted gravel. But obvious uneven spots, sharp broken stones and deep dips will create hidden troubles.
Sharp gravel edges will continuously press and cut the bottom of the hammer cow mat when cows stand and walk on it. This will speed up wear, crack the rubber layer and shorten the service life greatly. Deep hollows under the mat also make the mat bend repeatedly under load. The mat may shift, curl at edges or form trip risks for cattle.
If you have no plan to pour concrete, you still can use hammer cow mat on gravel. You need to do simple ground preparation first. Rake away all sharp large stones, fill deep low spots with fine stone dust and compact the whole base again to make it smooth as possible.
We do not recommend installing hammer cow mat on heavily uneven gravel without ground treatment. For the best anti-fatigue effect and longest service cycle, a relatively flat, firm base is always the ideal choice for hammer cow mat.
